HUMPBACK WHALES

Gather with air

These Humpback whales – Megaptera novaeangliae – have developed a unique ‘bubble-net’ feeding strategy that distinguishes them from other whale species. They blow air bubbles under water to generate a ‘net’ which collects and traps their prey. Researchers have observed two different sophisticated techniques of bubble nets: the ‘upward spiral’ and the ‘double-loop’. Here nature uses only the energy it needs and relies on freely available energy. This refined form of ‘gathering’ has been explored to create a net-less system to catch fish.
